MackinVIA and more...

Today Mr. Erickson's 8th grade reading and language arts kids learned about some new ebook resources. Students were directed to our media center website, which can be accessed by going to the Middle School Media Center tab and then by clicking on Janelle Erickson.

The first resource that students explored was FollettShelf. The link to FollettShelf is available via the library website. Our 8th graders practiced clicking on different books according to different search options such as genre and reading level.

The next ebook resource that students explored today was MackinVia. Our 8th graders created an account with MackinVia, which allows them to add books to their own personal backpack.

Our 8th graders had fun searching for books that might interest them, opening them up to view them online, and adding them to their "backpacks".
The 8th graders decided to look for books that would help them with their current science research on rocks and minerals. We looked for all the books on MackinVia that would help them with their learning on this topic. We came up with a list that they could read online or download to their devices.

Next, we took a look at the new app that is available for MackinVIA. The MackinVIA reader app for iPad and Droid is now available for FREE in iTunes or Google Play. Our 8th graders watched a quick video that explained how this app works and what you can do with it. The video is available on MackinVIA's Facebook page.

Throughout the day we had students who had already been in reading class earlier in the day teach the language arts students about MackinVIA. These students did a great job teaching the rest of the class how to use MackinVIA and how to add books to their backpack. The students posted below were our teachers for the different classes.

I have posted MackinVIA posters around our school that have our AEA username and password on them that students and teachers can use to log in to MackinVia and FollettShelf. The posters have a QR code on them that will take you directly to the MackinVia log in screen. Students were instructed to download QR code readers on their Smartphones in order to use the QR codes on the posters. The QR code reader that I modeled was Nigma Barcode Reader and is available in Google Play.
